  • Taking requests for blood draws from various doctors. These requests must then be entered into the patient's record along with the later results of the blood testing.
  • Making the patient feel comfortable and answering whatever questions they may have about their blood draw. A Phlebotomist must be extremely good at dealing with people who are not feeling well and may be irritable, or frightened of needles. In some cases, their duties may extend to monitoring blood pressure, pulse and respiratory readings while drawing blood.
  • They must then draw the blood, making sure that each sample is taken with sterile equipment and then treat the site where the blood was drawn from.
  • In large hospital or clinics the Phlebotomy technician must then ensure that the blood samples they take are labeled properly and stored correctly until someone from the lab picks them up.

While most of these duties may seem relatively simple on the surface, these duties involve a lot of extreme care and attention to detail. A simple mislabeling of a blood sample could result in a wrong diagnosis for patient who is depending on the clinic or hospital for correct diagnosis and treatment. To complicate matters a simple seemingly minor error can result in both an increased risk of spreading deadly disease or infections to the patient and the Phlebotomist.

You need to keep in mind that while blood tests may seem routine, it is these tests and the Phlebotomist who draws the blood that are often responsible for the patient receiving a fast diagnosis that in some cases may result in saving a patient's health and even their life.
